Editor’s Dispatch: Happy 100th Birthday, Charles Schulz!

Hi, all! I hope you are recovering from your Thanksgiving feasts if you celebrate! Today, Saturday, November 26, is a very important day for comics history: the 100th birthday of Charles “Sparky” Schulz, the creator of Peanuts, one of the most beloved comic strips of all time. Usually, we only post about birthdays related to King Features comics, but Mr. Schulz was such an inspiration and good friend to so many of our cartoonists and had so much influence on the direction of not just comics but pop culture in the 20th century that we wanted to celebrate his legacy. Patrick McDonnell, the creator of MUTTS, spearheaded this project in collaboration with the Charles M. Schulz Museum to celebrate this special birthday! As you look around Comics Kingdom today, you will see many of cartoonists have contributed to this celebration by honoring Mr. Schulz in their comic strips. Here is a collection where you can see them all together! Todd the Dinoaur by Patrick Roberts Crankshaft by Tom Batiuk and Dan Davis Rhymes With Orange by Hilary Price & Rina PIccolo The Lockhorns by Bunny Hoest and John Reiner Daddy […]

A Bodacious Comic Strip Crossover From 2005

Comic strip crossovers are so much fun!  I love reading them.  Several great comic strip crossovers from years past were featured on the Comics Kingdom blog this week. That fun blog post reminded me of one of the greatest comic strip crossovers in which I was honored to participate.  It was for Dagwood and Blondie’s 75th anniversary in 2005. Snuffy and Loweezy were among many other comic strip characters that were invited to help them celebrate. Throughout the month of August, comic strip cartoonists everywhere included Blondie and Dagwood in their own comic strips.  The Bumsteads were depicted giving their characters an invitation to the big 75th Anniversary Party. Snuffy and Loweezy get their invitation in our Barney Google and Snuffy Smith comic strip from August 29, 2005.   Then on September 4th, in the Blondie comic strip, the Bumsteads were joined by all their comic strip friends who had gotten an invitation to their 75th Anniversary Party!  It was a real hootin’ holler!     Wow!  Such a beautiful Blondie comic strip from September 4, 2005 commemorating 75 years!

    Happy Birthday, Blondie!

Since 1930, Blondie has been giving the world plenty of laughs and lots of fun. Celebrate with this retrospective piece written by CBS News exploring the history of the strip! Did you know that Blondie was made into a few TV shows and PLENTY of movies?   https://www.cbsnews.com/news/almanac-blondie/   You’re gonna have to excuse Dagwood, though. Keeping us readers entertained for 89 years is exhausting enough. He’s going to need a good nap today!

    Bodacious Thanks, Blondie!!

The Blondie Sunday Page from October, 25, 2015. Snuffy appears in the second panel drinking punch with Prince Valiant at the Bumstead’s Halloween party. On October 25th, Dean Young and John Marshall created one of the most beautifully crafted Sunday pages I’ve ever seen!  I was so incredibly impressed when I saw the Halloween-themed strip that day, first in my local paper, and then again on Comics Kingdom!  Wow!  It was amazing, both in art and text!  What a great idea!  So, imagine my total surprise when earlier this week I opened my front door to see a package delivered from my mailman.  What was inside?!  A gorgeous full-color signed print of this Blondie Sunday Page!  Thank you so much Dean and John…it just goes to show, the bigger they are, the kinder they are!  I was truly honored they thought of Snuffy and me. The kind inscription on the print they sent me.
