Is This Episode Still Going? Inside the Endless Charm of Sally Forth

The Inside the Kingdom podcast goes long (and strong) with Sally Forth writer Francesco Marciuliano and artist Jim Keefe to uncover what keeps this beloved strip fresh—and funny—over four decades later.
There’s a certain magic to comic strips that can make you laugh, reflect, and raise an eyebrow—all in three panels. And if you’ve ever read Sally Forth, you know exactly what we mean.
This week on Inside the Kingdom, we sit down with the talented creative duo behind the strip—Francesco Marciuliano (writer since 1999) and Jim Keefe (artist since 2013)—for a candid, hilarious, and somehow wonderfully long conversation about everything from Hilary Forth’s teenage moods to how jokes land across generations.
Yes, it’s a long episode. Yes, it’s on purpose.

What Is Sally Forth, Anyway?
First syndicated in 1982 by Greg Howard, Sally Forth flipped the traditional domestic strip model on its head by centering on a working mom—a rarity at the time. The name itself is a pun (of course it is) that sets the tone: upbeat, forward-moving, and just a little tongue-in-cheek.
Over the decades, Sally Forth has become a staple of the comics page. It’s known for its smart blend of relatable family dynamics, workplace comedy, and the absurd little rituals of everyday life—plus the occasional meta detour that’s unmistakably Marciuliano.
Sally Forth remains one of the most consistent and surprising strips on the comics page. Whether it’s navigating awkward dinner parties, overthinking lunch meetings, or wondering if your daughter is way cooler than you ever were—Sally’s world still feels strikingly familiar.
At its heart, Sally Forth isn’t just about family. It’s about your family.
Highlights from the Interview
How Francesco inherited Sally’s voice from creator Greg Howard, and what it’s like writing a character that’s older than some of her readers.
Jim’s process for bringing the strip to life visually, and why collaboration works better when it starts with trust—and a shared sense of humor.
The evolution of Hilary Forth, and why the writers never quite let her age out of eighth grade.
What happens when a comic strip references Duran Duran, deep-cut poetry, and action movies in the same week.
The creative tension between nostalgia and staying current—and how they strike that balance (usually with jokes).

Still reading? Good. Because according to Jim and Francesco, sometimes the best punchline is the one you wait just a little too long to deliver.
