It only took one small sketch of an utterly unimpressed skeleton for Tommy Devoid to realize that he had discovered the star for his creation Never Been Deader. A comic strip following the skeleton Lifeless Carl in his daily grief of working a grueling office job, Never Been Deader creatively depicts how it feels to live the humdrum nine-to-five life.
As an employee in the Department of Intake at Afterlife Industries, Carl shares many of the same complaints as the usual non-deceased white-collar worker, like getting granted a half day but having to do double the work in part of the time. Or having to drink the most foul-tasting coffee you’ve ever had just because it’s free. Oh, and who can forget the lingering promise of a raise that has yet to take form in your bank account? Not Carl, that’s for sure!
Luckily, Carl has his colleagues to alleviate some of his workplace anxiety. Myrtle, pictured above in her chic pantsuit, is Carl’s best friend at work and who he frequently goes to chop up the day’s nutty events. Carl also has his often-confused trainee, Newbie, who has no choice but to be taken under Carl’s bony wing at Afterlife.
But work doesn’t always end when the clock strikes 5 p.m. After Afterlife Industries, you’d think Carl would be left to enjoy some sweet downtime after a long day of pushing pencils, but this is when it becomes Furball’s time to shine. Furball, Carl’s black cat whose paws remain sassily perched atop his hips, only has one concern, and it isn’t serving as an emotional support animal for his owner — it’s being fed on time.
So, this is what the Great Beyond decided to gift to Lifeless Carl. It ain’t much, and it’s definitely dead inside. Follow along with Carl’s daily existential crises in Tommy Devoid’s “Never Been Deader” on Comics Kingdom!
