Six Comics for Your Weekend, Starting With a Very Questionable Date

By Alex Garcia
Bizarro comic: a turtle and a snail play checkers beneath a huge hourglass, with coffee cups beside them.

Picking a favorite comic is easy until you read the next one. So I’m bringing you six.

I’m Alex from Comics Kingdom, and this is my weekly excuse to pull up a chair and share a few strips I think you’ll enjoy. Some made me laugh immediately. Others had a little detail I wanted to point out before you moved on.

This week, Ham Gravy’s love life requires our attention. We’ll get to the cat in bat wings shortly. I promise.

Ham Gravy is having a lovely evening

Popeye Sunday strip: Ham Gravy remains delighted as his date reveals her monstrous form; she later complains to fellow monsters at a bar.

Ham. Buddy. A woman wanting your soul is usually the part where you reconsider the relationship.

Ham is practically floating through this date, and I love how little the monster reveal does to interrupt that. She’s making what should be a fairly compelling case against seeing her again. He seems prepared to work around it.

By the time we get to the bar, I’m on her side. Imagine going out to terrorize someone and coming home concerned about his self-esteem.

Would love to borrow some of this confidence

Preferably somewhere inland.

Two tiny figures stand on a beach beneath a towering curling blue wave; a lighthouse is visible on the distant shore.

That wave is gorgeous. The blue, the curve, the tiny lighthouse over on the right. There’s plenty to admire while the two figures on the beach wait for somebody else to handle the situation.

I appreciate their faith in other people. I would appreciate it more if they were walking briskly in the opposite direction.

Let them have their dream home

A clown couple tours a home and admires a doghouse and water bowl as if they were a backyard cabana and pool while the realtor looks on.

Look at them holding hands. They’re delighted. They’re already mentally inviting people over.

Of course a couple who can fit their entire social circle into a tiny car would have a different relationship with square footage. I’m especially fond of the realtor’s polite smile. Whatever she’s thinking, she has correctly decided to keep it to herself.

I’m unexpectedly invested in these two getting the house. Please let the inspection go well.

The wings can stay

A black shop cat initially resents its bat-wing costume, then embraces it after startling a person at the counter.

This cat has objections to the costume. Serious objections. Questions of dignity are involved.

Then a human gets startled, and suddenly there’s a business case for the wings.

That severe little face never lets up. Even its change of heart looks like something it would deny if you brought it up later. I’m glad Halloween is working out for somebody here. The person behind the counter deserves a very uneventful lunch break.

Swee’Pea would like his pockets back

The Sea Hag and Swee’Pea travel between realities. Swee’Pea changes from pants back into his gown, pauses while recounting his trip, and tells the Sea Hag he misses having pockets.

Swee’Pea has seen a reality where he doesn’t exist, and Popeye seems happier without him. That’s a lot for a kid to come home with.

Then comes the pause. He’s back in his familiar gown, but the pockets stayed with the pants.

I love that little interruption in the third panel. He has a whole unsettling adventure to talk through, and suddenly there’s a much more immediate problem with what he’s wearing.

Somebody get this kid a pocket. He’s had a day.

Clear your afternoon. Possibly tomorrow, too.

Bizarro single-panel comic: a turtle and a snail play checkers with coffee cups beside them while an enormous hourglass towers over the table.

Yes, Bizarro gets a second spot. I wasn’t going to leave these two out.

The hourglass is ridiculous, but the takeaway coffees are what really get me. As though anyone here has somewhere to be afterward. I hope those lids keep the heat in for a very long time.

After Ham’s date, an approaching wall of water, and a cat discovering the benefits of intimidation, I’m happy to sit here for a minute. Take your time, gentlemen. We’ve had enough excitement.

That’s my six for the week. If you came here for an old favorite and found another comic to follow, I’m counting that as a good weekend.

See you next week,
Alex
