A Weekend Among Legends at the 80th Annual Reuben Awards
I’m still trying to process the 80th Annual Reuben Awards. For three days in Columbus, Ohio; cartoonists, illustrators, wirters, animators, editors, and fans came together to celebrate the people who make this art from so special. The National Cartoonists Society was founding in 1946, and there was something really meaningful about marking 80 years in a city with such a deep connection to cartooning history. Columbus was an amazing host. Between the National Cartoonists Society conference, the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, and the energy around Cartoon Crossroads Columbus, the whole weekend felt like a love letter to the craft. And honestly, I felt like a kid in the candy store! Working with King Features means I get to be around some truly legendary creators, but imposter syndrome definitely creeps in sometimes. Then you find yourself standing in a room with cartoonists whose work you’ve admired for years, talking shop, sharing a laugh, or watching them draw for a crowd, and it all becomes altogether rewarding. King Features was proud to be represented by an incredible group of nominees: Ricardo Siri, better known as Liniers (Macanudo), Ricardo Martinez (Goomer), […]

Provoking a strong emotional response from readers right from the beginning, it grew steadily in popularity, passing the 1,000-newspaper mark in 1982. It is continued today by their sons, writers Brian and Greg Walker and artist Chance Browne. Hagar The Horrible Hägar the Horrible broke all records when it was launched on […]Drawing the Line: Dan Misdea on Humor, Hustle, and Toons by Dan
If you’ve ever scrolled past a single-panel comic that made you laugh out loud and immediately want to share it, there’s a good chance it came from Dan Misdea. This week on Inside the Kingdom, we had the pleasure of chatting with Dan, the cartoonist behind the smart, silly, and wonderfully offbeat strip Toons by Dan, which joined the Comics Kingdom lineup in 2024. Dan’s work has appeared in The New Yorker, Air Mail, and Weekly Humorist, and he’s quickly made a name for himself with his clean drawing style and perfectly timed punchlines. In this episode, we go behind the scenes with Dan to explore how he crafts his jokes, what inspires his unique sense of humor, and the journey that brought him from doodling as a kid to becoming a syndicated cartoonist. Some highlights from the conversation: ~ How Dan balances absurdity and relatability in his work ~ His favorite comics growing up (and which ones still influence him today) ~ What it’s really like to land a strip on Comics Kingdom ~ His process—from brainstorms and sketchbooks to final panels Whether you’re a fellow cartoonist, a fan […]
Deck the Panels: Dan Misdea’s TBD Joins the Comics Kingdom Family
We’re beyond excited to welcome Dan Misdea, the brilliant mind behind some of the funniest single-panel cartoons you’ll ever see, to Comics Kingdom! You might know Dan from his laugh-out-loud work in The New Yorker, Air Mail, Narrative, and other top publications. Now, he’s bringing his unique brand of humor to our platform with TBD (Toons by Dan)—a comic strip that’s as clever as it is unexpected. Who Is Dan Misdea? Dan Misdea didn’t exactly take the straight-and-narrow road to becoming a cartoonist. Hailing from New Jersey, he earned a degree in Economics from Penn State and spent a few years crunching numbers in finance and accounting. But spreadsheets weren’t entirely cutting it. In 2020, Dan decided to follow his passion for cartooning, and we’re all better for it. Since then, his cartoons have earned him a Silver Reuben Award for Best Gag Cartoons in 2024 and plenty of well-deserved laughs from audiences around the globe. Dan’s talents don’t stop at cartoons. He’s also the author of the Eisner-nominated children’s book The Light Inside and AB@C: And Other Gramograms (co-authored with Rob Meyerson). When Dan isn’t sketching out his next […]
