Indie Spirit, Sunday Funnies: Comics Kingdom at MoCCA Fest

MoCCA Arts Fest isn’t your typical convention.
It’s where cartoonists bring sketchbooks instead of banners, where zines sit next to legacy names, and where you can actually talk to the person who made the thing you’re holding.
In our latest Inside the Kingdom episode, we sat down with Maritsa Patrinos and Isabella Bannerman to talk about why MoCCA still matters, and why Comics Kingdom showing up there just makes sense.

Why MoCCA Hits Different
At MoCCA, comics feel physical again. You’re not scrolling. You’re flipping through pages, meeting artists, and seeing how things are made. That kind of connection is harder to find now, which is exactly why it matters more.
As Maritsa put it, the more digital everything gets, the more people value something made by hand.
Indie Isn’t Small Anymore
Independent comics have always been where new ideas start. That hasn’t changed. What’s changed is how important those spaces feel now.
Isabella pointed out that with traditional media shifting, indie spaces and events like MoCCA give artists a place to speak freely and connect directly with readers.

From Zines to Comics Kingdom
Both Maritsa and Isabella bring indie roots into their work on Six Chix. That DIY mindset, just make the work and put it out there, still drives everything they do.

And it shows. New voices, new topics, and a wider range of stories keep the strip evolving in ways that feel fresh.
Why We’re There
Comics Kingdom has history. MoCCA has energy. Putting those two things in the same room just works.
It’s a chance to connect generations of readers, introduce classic characters to new fans, and be part of the same creative space where comics are still being figured out in real time.

Come Find Us
We’ll be at MoCCA Fest, March 28–29 in NYC. Stop by, say hi, and maybe leave with something unexpected.
That’s usually how the best comics find you.
