Blondie’s Thanksgiving Recipes: Dagwood’s Leftover Sandwich

You didn’t think Thanksgiving ended with dessert, did ya? Around here, the day after is when the real magic happens. That’s when the fridge turns into a treasure chest of leftovers just waiting to be piled sky-high into the ultimate sandwich.

Dagwood’s Thanksgiving Leftover Sandwich: a tower of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, and cranberry sauce so big you’ll need both hands (and maybe a game plan) to tackle it. It’s messy, glorious, and 100% worth it.

Blondie says it’s “too much.” Dagwood says there’s no such thing. One bite, and you’ll see which one of them is right.

So grab the bread, open that fridge, and let’s turn yesterday’s feast into today’s masterpiece.

Ingredients (aka whatever’s left in the fridge)

  • 2 thick slices of sandwich bread or whatever’s sturdy enough to hold the beast
  • Leftover roasted turkey (white and dark meat… stack it high!)
  • A few slices of ham (because why not?)
  • Stuffing (bonus points if it’s still got crispy edges)
  • Mashed potatoes (yes, on the sandwich)
  • A drizzle (or flood) of gravy
  • Cranberry sauce (for the zing!)
  • A slice of cheese (Dagwood likes Swiss, but go wild)
  • Lettuce, tomato, or a pickle if you’re feeling fancy
  • Optional: a little mayo or mustard for the bread
  • And for the brave: a fried egg on top

Directions:

  1. Start with the base.
Lay down a slice of bread. Dagwood says: “Strong foundation, strong sandwich.”
Spread on a little mayo or mustard if you like.
  2. Pile on the turkey.
Big chunks, lots of it. No dainty slices here we’re building skyscrapers.
  3. Add the stuffing.
Press it down just a bit, so your tower doesn’t topple too soon.
  4. Scoop on mashed potatoes.
A generous layer. Don’t be shy, it’s the glue that holds everything together.
  5. Gravy time!
Drizzle that gravy over the mashed potatoes.
(Dagwood’s tip: keep a napkin handy or two.)
  6. Now the cranberry sauce.
A little sweet, a little tangy, every great sandwich needs balance.
  7. Add ham, cheese, and any extras.
Lettuce, tomato, pickle, even a slice of pie if you’re feeling rebellious. Dagwood doesn’t judge.
  8. Top with the second slice of bread.
Carefully press down. Marvel at your creation.
Dagwood: “If it’s not taller than your hand, you didn’t do it right.”
  9. Optional: crown it with a fried egg.
    Totally unnecessary. Absolutely perfect.

That’s a wrap on our Thanksgiving table! From buttery biscuits to creamy mashed potatoes and that golden, flaky apple pie and of course, Dagwood’s legendary leftover sandwich. We’ve cooked, laughed, and feasted our way through it all together.
From our home to yours wishing you love, laughter, and leftovers worth bragging about.
Happy Thanksgiving!
