WINNER WINNER: 2022 WILL EISNER COMIC INDUSTRY AWARD
Well, blow me down! Popeye and his team make history once again. Fantagraphics took home gold at this year’s Eisner Awards for Best Archival Collection/Project-Strips (at least 20 years old). The award was granted for Popeye: The E.C. Segar Sundays, vol. 1 by E.C. Segar, edited by Gary Groth and Conrad Groth. The Fantagraphics team took home 3 awards total, making them the most decorated publisher at the 2022 awards.
Praise for Popeye: The E.C. Segar Sundays, vol. 1
“An essential volume of both graphic storytelling and early 20th-century art. … Nearly every episode collected here reveals Segar to be an absurdly hilarious master draftsman and wildly entertaining storyteller.” — Library Journal
“One of the great geniuses of the comic strip form, E. C. Segar created work that represents some of America’s finest art in its epic scale, colloquial language, daffy humor and themes of romance and commerce.… Not to be missed.” — Time Magazine
“Just as Charles Dickens took advantage of the serial publication of his early novels to introduce new characters and change directions, so also did Segar add, subtract and tinker until he had his comic strip working at its peak — and a brilliant, witty peak it was.” — The Washington Post
Sure to be another hit is Fantagraphic’s Popeye Volume 2: Wimpy and his hamburgers, which will be released this November.
