1980s – Politics

By Brian Walker

The Sunday page above was published on November 13, 1988. In that year’s presidential election, Republican Vice President George H. W. Bush defeated Democratic Governor Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts.

For the most part, we avoid direct political commentary in the strip. Advocacy for any particular candidate, issue or cause risks alienating readers.

On November 4, 2008 Barack Obama was elected president of the United States. He was the first African American to serve as our Commander in Chief.

The strip below, from 2009, includes a reference to Obama but it was done in a totally non-political way.

Here’s another example of how a political joke can be made non-partisan.

In the recent election, we again avoided making any political comments. We have to be careful not to offend any of our readers who have conflicting affiliations and beliefs.
