A Sunday page with repetitive images like the one above is known in the funnies business as a “wallpaper gag.” The reader is led to wonder what the point of all the pictures are until the ending provides an explanation.
Chance Browne had fun drawing Trixie trying on 12 different hats. He probably has many of these around his house which he used for reference.
Here is another example of a “wallpaper gag” with Trixie from 2005. She is sitting in her sunbeam thinking about her future.
Some wallpaper gags are wordless, others have dialogue – whatever works.
