Timeline – 2010 Part 4

By Brian Walker

The Sunday page above is semi-autobiographical. I am not a big fan of karaoke. The main problem is that I’m not a very good singer. In fact I’m tone deaf. I could have easily uttered Hi’s line, “That’s the last thing I want to do.”

This gag needed a twist at the end, so we had Hi monopolizing the microphone. This is pure fantasy.

My wife Abby, on the other hand, loves to sing karaoke. She practices in the car with CDs I make for her every year. Among her favorite songs are “I Try” by Macy Gray, “Crazy” by Patsy Cline and “Piece of My Heart” by Janis Joplin.

Here is a photo of Abby singing with her karaoke buddy Jeffery Albanesi at Zio’s in Wilton, Connecticut in 2019.

The National Cartoonists Society has a karaoke night every year at the annual Reubens Awards weekend. Some of the members are very good singers and perfomers. Below is Mark Tatulli, creator of the comic strips “Heart of the City” and “Lio” doing a “Little Mermaid” number in full costume.

Next week we’ll feature a special bonus page from 2010 in our Timeline series, so be sure to check back.
