As a parent of young children in the 1980s and 90s, I observed that birthday parties were getting more and more extravagant. We had some theme parties, but they were at our house and most of the decorations were homemade. Kids did expect to be entertained and leave with a goody bag.
By the 2000s, when I got the idea for the Sunday page above, my daugher and son were in their teenage years and were beyond these types of celebrations. It seemed to me that when parents went “all out” on their bashes, the birthday boy or girl often ended up disapppointed or even “bored.”
Of course, the mega-rich have birhtday parties that rival most weddings. Here are a few photos to show what money can buy.
In today’s world of social media, birthday parties have become even more over-the-top. Here’s a link to an interesting article about the current trend.
A note about the lead-in panels: Artist Chance Browne has a daugher named “Rachel” and a wife named “Deb.”.
