AN INTERVIEW WITH GUY AND DETHANY FROM ‘ON THE FASTRACK’

By Edgar Ortiz

Last Halloween, our favorite security guard proposed to our favorite personal assistant! It was not only a night of spooks, but cheer and excitement as Dethany said “YES” to Guy! Though it may have not been a surprise to many, one can’t help but to feel happy for these two, especially after witnessing that elaborate and creative proposal that shows just how much love these two have for one another.

Things have been a little quiet since then (with the exception of the holidays and Guy’s preparation for his thesis defense) so we caught up with them to learn more about that special night, a small tease for what’s to come on that wedding, and just how is it like to live that goth lifestyle!

-Dethany, going back to that magical day in October, did you see an engagement coming or did it completely surprise you?

DETHANY

Guy and I had already moved in together, and marriage was already on our minds. Still, with Guy’s thesis defense coming up for his Master’s degree, and his job search that would come after, there was a lot going on already so the timing was a wonderful surprise.

GUY

It was actually all connected. With the changes in our lives that are on the way, commitment gives our relationship the best chance of success. And I’ll never forgot how Dethany’s face lit up when she saw the ring.

DETHANY

…Which I immediately had reset into a skull theme. Sorry.

GUY

It’s perfect. So you.

-What do you consider different about your workplace after the engagement?

GUY

We’ve been seriously dating for quite a while, so everyone already sees us as a couple. Most people seem more concerned about my employment status.

DETHANY

Some coworkers *cough* Fi *cough* seem to think Guy is going to quit immediately. That won’t be the case.

GUY

During the daytime I’ll be going on job interviews for a position in the tech field, so it helps working at night.

DETHANY

Ironically, Guy is the one who gets to be nocturnal!

-Will the wedding be fun spooky or SPOOOOKY spooky?

DETHANY

I fail to see the distinction. Just kidding! It’ll be fun spooky, since all ages will be there, including my nieces and nephews. Think “Courage the Cowardly Dog” instead of “The Shining.”

GUY

With a bit of the The Haunted Mansion ride thrown in.

-Guy, what’s your favorite thing about being with someone who is really into goth culture?

GUY

You never know what to expect with Dethany, but she always makes sure that her dark humor comes from her desire to make others happy. That takes some getting used to for people like my father, who didn’t warm up to her until they started playing chess together.

I got where she was coming from right away, and I never want to let her go.

DETHANY

Boo!

GUY

Yeah, like that.

DETHANY

In all seriousness, my Goth persona stems from an awareness of how short life can be, and wanting to treasure every moment. Being with Guy makes me happy…especially when we have picnics in cemeteries.

-What do you want the wedding cake to be made out of?

DETHANY

Red velvet, with vampire figurines on top. And dripping red icing!

-Which one’s better: The Munsters or The Addams Family?

DETHANY

Don’t make me choose!

GUY

It’s the Addams Family, but she doesn’t want to slight the beloved family at 1313 Mockingbird Lane. They’re both dear to her.

DETHANY

And the Munsters have a pet dragon! Spot!
