This past weekend my wife, Karen, and I attended the annual Fall Meeting of the Southeast Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society of which I am honored to be a member. This year’s meeting was in beautiful Knoxville, Tennessee. Here are some photos from the weekend:
In this photo, I am drawing Snuffy Smith for oncology clinic patient Lucas Salyers, 7, of Kingsport, on Friday at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. This hospital visit was a true highlight of weekend for the cartoonists who were able to attend. Please see the Knoxville News-Sentinel’s wonderful story and video of our visit here.
Steve Barr of Drawn To Help is presented the Meglin Award for volunteerism by Chapter Chairman, John Sheppard. The award is named after the late MAD Magazine great, Nick Meglin.
Bill Holbrook, cartoonist of the On The Fastrack, Safe Havens and Kevin and Kell comic strips is presented the Jack Davis Award by Chapter Chairman, John Sheppard. The award was created in recognition of the legendary MAD Magazine artist, Jack Davis, and recognizes the SECNCS Cartoonist Of The Year. Bill is also holding a framed caricature John drew of him.
Talented Animation Director Mark Simon gave a very humorous, entertaining and educational presentation on his wide and varied career in animation and the importance of promotion. Visit his wonderful website here.
The talented James Allen gave an informative and inspirational talk about his journey to becoming the cartoonist for the Mark Trail comic strip.
We are already looking forward to next year’s meeting with this fun, talented bunch of folks!
