Timeline – 1967 Part 2

by Brian Walker, Greg Walker and Chance Browne

Hi and Lois Sunday page color proof, March 12, 1967.

In this classic episode, Trixie reviews the events of her day while she is trying to fall asleep. Among the many pleasurable experiences she had were finding jelly beans behind the couch, playing peek-a-boo with the postman, looking in the window of a toy store and curling up with Dawg. In six consecutive thought balloons these activities are recreated in cute drawings showing Trixie in various situations. Her positive mood is disrupted in the final panel when she remembers the unpleasant shot she got at the doctor’s. This type of gag has a rhythm that builds toward the surprise ending.

There is also an interesting use of color. In panels #5, #7 and #9 bold blocks are superimposed over the black-and-white art. The lettering is also highlighted with color. This creates a modern look that is different from the standard approach that was typically used. Dik Browne was always experimenting with different styles and techniques in the drawing, layout and coloring of the strip.

Next week we will be featuring another outstanding example from 1967, so stay tooned.
