Joe Giella Retires From Drawing “Mary Worth”

by Karen Moy and June Brigman

The legendary Joe Giella

Saturday, July 23, 2016, features the last “Mary Worth” strip drawn by the legendary Joe Giella.  After decades of incredible work, Joe is taking much deserved time away from the drawing board.

June Brigman and her husband Roy (who are currently doing the Sundays) will be creating the art for the dailies too.

Joe will still be accepting commissions for paintings and other artwork, but without the relentless syndication deadlines!  If you attend a Comic Con in San Diego or elsewhere, you might run into him.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Joe for a long time.  Before I started writing “Mary Worth,” Joe was working on the strip with writer John Saunders.  And before that, Joe was drawing, inking, penciling, or otherwise having a hand in features such as “Flash Gordon” and “The Phantom” for King Features…and “Batman”, “The Green Lantern”, “The Flash”, and many more for DC Comics.

On top of his impressive background and talent, Joe has always been humble and kind. His ethics, integrity, and professionalism made our working relationship an easy one.  I’ve been extremely fortunate to have worked with such a talented and terrific guy!

Thank you, Joe, for making my words come to life in such a beautiful way.
