Book Cover Designs…
I was really pleased with the way the cover came out on our new book collection, Balls Of Fire! More Snuffy Smith Comics. But, as is true with most of my artwork, it was not the first cover illustration I drew. I threw many drawings away before I even finished sketching them out. Some never made it past rough sketch form. And some made it to a tightly pencilled state using my light table before they were tossed out. But that is just part of the process for me. I created quite a few designs that ultimately did not work for one reason or another. But the one selected was my editor, Brendan Burford’s, favorite design and my favorite design, as well! We were both very happy with it! So you can have an idea of the process, here are two pretty tightly pencilled cover designs that did not make the cut and the one that DID!
I felt this drawing just didn’t work.
This drawing was just too busy and the characters were pretty small for a cover in my opinion.
The cover design that we ultimately chose. I hope you like it!
One other illustration of the Smith family did not work for the cover as I originally planned, but I really liked the drawing. So we ended up using it on Page 4 as a full-page illustration. If you buy the book, please let me know what you think! You can order our new book, Balls Of Fire! More Snuffy Smith Comics on Amazon.com here!
