Ask A Cartoonist: Sweet Tooth

by Tea

It’s National Candy Day, the day that we gorge ourselves on all the sweet treats we’ve collected on Halloween.

While I sit here stuffing my face with candy corn, I asked all of our cartoonists to tell us about THEIR favorite candies.

Bill Griffith, Zippy the Pinhead:

Zippy loves candy. Especially really big candy he can talk to.

Ron Ferdinand, Dennis the Menace:

Didn’t have to search TOO long in the Ketcham Classic Library to find a ‘candy-themed’ panel.

Bud Grace, The Piranha Club:

I’m not fond of candy or sweets of any kind, for that matter. I check all the labels on prepared foods to see if sugar is added. Do you know how hard it is to buy a loaf of bread that doesn’t have some sort of sugar as an ingredient? I really hate it. Sugar is bad for you. I get all my carbs from booze.

Terri Libenson, The Pajama Diaries:

It’s a tie between Butterfinger and peanut M & M’s.

By the way, the Butterfinger Blizzard at DQ is my once-a-year birthday treat. Humina.

John Rose, Barney Google and Snuffy Smith:

The General Store in Hootin’ Holler is known for always having a bodacious supply of Penny Candy! And Jughaid is its’ most frequent customer!

Alex Hallatt, Arctic Circle:

I love Green & Black’s chocolate. Not only is it organic and ethically sourced, it’s also delicious!

Hilary Price, Rhymes With Orange:

Bit-O-Honey. Swedish Fish. Mary Janes. Butterfingers.

(See if you can find all ten candies listed!)

Mort Walker, Beetle Bailey:

I’m a chocoholic and everyone knows it. Whenever I’m invited to dinner the host is always sure to have a chocolate cake. On my Birthday I’m sure to get at least ten boxes of chocolates. Many of my fans who write and request a drawing lure me with chocolates. I’m sure my insides are coated with chocolate and I thrive on it. Something keeps me going at 92 and it’s not onions.

Bill Holbrook, Safe Havens:

The newest member of the Safe Havens cast is baby Gregor, who has a layer of chlorophyll in his skin that enables him to conduct photosynthesis (i.e., converting sunlight into sugar). In effect, he makes his own candy.
