Hi, everyone!
I’ve been so excited about the changing weather– this weekend I got out my autumn clothes, and it’s so delightful to be able to put on big, comfy sweaters and boots to wear to work. I love getting ready for Halloween (my favorite holiday), not to mention all the spooky displays in stores (time to stock up on skeleton pajamas!), the apple cider, and lots and lots of pie.
This week, I asked out cartoonists to tell me their favorite things about the fall season!
Jeff Corriveau of DeFlocked:
I know people have many sensory triggers when it comes to Autumn. There’s the olfactory nirvana of pumpkin and nutmeg; the crunch of a necrotic muster of leaves splayed beneath our toes; even the tease of the arctic North winds, playfully chapping the ridges of our coffee-plumped lips.
I, however, am more of a traditionalist when it comes to matters of Autumn. And by traditionalist, I mean I throw virgins into volcanoes to ensure a good harvest.
Yes, call me old school or out-of-touch. I’ve heard it all before. But I have a root cellar full of corpulent tubers that says otherwise. A sublime cognac-braised yam in a saffron butter reduction will quickly alleviate you of your bigotry.
To be fair, my village hasn’t always reaped the fortune of our storied traditions. The barren acreage of 2009, to wit. Personally, I question the veracity of that year’s virgin. She listened to Black Eyed Peas and drove a convertible. Enough said.
As I await this year’s volcano permit, let me leave you with a classic DeFlocked Sunday from ‘09, showcasing how the crew embraces this time of year. Please excuse the horrible art. I was still drawing with a quill wedged between my armpit.
Bill Holbrook of Kevin & Kell, On the Fastrack, and Safe Havens:
Dethany and Lenore have their own special autumn traditions. Halloween is the most obvious, of course, but there’s also this:
John Rose of Barney Google and Snuffy Smith:
We live in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, an area known for beautiful Fall foliage, so seeing that incredible Fall color is one of my favorite things! I also love football games, Fall festivals and Halloween and Thanksgiving with the family.
Dethany and Lenore have their own special autumn traditions. Halloween is the most obvious, of course, but there’s also this:
David Reddick of Intelligent Life:
My favorite thing about fall is the crisp air, smell of the turning leaves, and the obsession towards HOT BEVERAGES! (Gwen agrees!)
Ron Ferdinand of Dennis the Menace:
Poor ol’ Henry Mitchell is the FALL guy in this Ketcham Klassic.
Kevin Frank of Heaven’s Love Thrift Shop:
Hilary Price of Rhymes With Orange:
I don’t know if this is a favorite fall activity, but it is a frequent one— changing clothes in the car because it’s chilly in the am and then hot in the afternoon. I don’t have a car–I have a carmoire.
Isabella Bannerman of Six Chix:
One of my favorite things to do in the fall is put on an extra comfy sweater and draw witches! I love the freedom of expression and creativity that seems to inspire people around Halloween, and one of my favorite cartoonists is Charles Addams, so in the fall, I like all things spooky and goofy.
