Last night was the first night of Chanukkah so I’d like to wish a very happy holiday again to everyone celebrating!
Of course, Chanukkah is a holiday to celebrate miracles and extraordinary bravery in overcoming great odds. It’s also, conveniently, National Underdog Day here in the United States, which seemed like a nice little thematic overlap. So I asked our cartoonists this week to share underdog stories!
In “Safe Havens,” Dave and the Havens University basketball team were definite underdogs in 2009 when they played for the NCAA basketball championship. Dave’s teammate was 7-foot-tall Marcie, the first woman to play on a men’s team. She had sprained her ankle in the previous game and was playing hurt as the clock wound down to the final seconds…
–Bill Holbrook, On the Fastrack and Safe Havens
Are you kidding. Guess who wins?
–Bud Grace, The Piranha Club
A picture’s worth a thousand words
–Ron Ferdinand, Dennis the Menace
Sometimes all an underdog needs is a good motivational speech…
–Jim Keefe, Sally Forth and Flash Gordon
The girl in this strip is the underdog. She’s finally going to have her big moment… or is she?
–Stephanie Piro, Six Chix
Beetle is always the underdog… at least when Sarge is around.
–Greg Walker, Beetle Bailey
— Alex Hallatt, Arctic Circle
Have a great Chanukkah, enjoy lots of fried food, and we’ll see you next week!
