King Features spoke to writer Jeff Parker about what readers can expect to see in Flash Gordon #1.

What is the focus of Flash Gordon #1?

Jeff: We’re keeping it simple and straightforward, letting you get to know the core group of Flash, Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov. I like their dynamic, they complement each other well even when they don’t get along.

What can fans expect to see or experience?

Jeff: After an initial harrowing chase through the skies of Mongo, they get to spend some quality time on the super forest world of Arboria, and all the strange life there.

Flash01-Cov-MooneyWhat era is the story set?

Jeff: This is in the present day, but on alien worlds so it feels and looks very much like the classic Raymond strips. Artist Evan Shaner is designing the clothes and props with a very retro-classic approach.

Any teases you care to share before the comic book becomes available?

Jeff: If you were ever a fan of the Lion Man Thun, you’re in luck.

What projects are you currently working on?

Jeff:  I’m currently writing the Batman ’66 comic based on the classic show, and Aquaman for DC Comics.

What is about Flash Gordon that appeals to you?

Jeff: He’s the best of our world dropped into a ruthless alien culture, and starts spreading the idea of hope, it’s a great core story.

What separates this Flash Gordon from previous ones published?

Jeff: We’re making our Flash quite a bit more fun-spirited, he is not a dour guy. It’s that enthusiasm that infects the oppressed colonies of Mongo.

If a live action Flash Gordon movie was green lit today, who would you cast as the leads?

Jeff: I’m never good at casting scenarios. Flash has to be someone athletic, smart, and with a winning smile. Dale needs to convey clever, and Zarkov needs to be brilliant and flawed.
