Hi Quits Smoking – Part Two

by Brian Walker, Greg Walker and Chance Browne

Here are the next three strips from the 1967 Hi and Lois sequence in which Hi struggles to give up smoking.

HI and Lois daily strips, January 5, 6 and 7, 1967. Hi and Lois daily strips, January 5, 6 and 7, 1967.

In the second strip, Lois asks Hi about Jack Tippit.  In real life, Jack Tippit was a longtime friend of Mort Walker’s.  He was an Air Force veteran, a top-selling magazine gag cartoonist, creator of the syndicated panel Amy, a contributor to the comic strip Henry, president of the National Cartoonists Society and the first director of the Museum of Cartoon Art.  Mort occasionally dropped the names of personal acquaintances into Hi and Lois for his own amusement.

We will be posting the last three strips of this story soon, so check back to see if Hi succeeds in breaking his smoking habit.
