For many parents, Labor Day represents not only the last day of summer but also the beginning of the school year. Hopefully, school supplies have been purchased and clothes for the first day have been selected. Labor Day is a brief pause before ten months of shuttling kids around, nagging them to do their homework, attending open houses and teacher conferences and watching athletic events.
For this 2003 Sunday page, I did some research to learn about the origins of the holiday.
Chance did a great job illustrating the historical scenes and the backyard picnic in the final panel.
Returning students probably have mixed emotions at this time of the year. Chip’s attitude is probably typical of many who lament the end of summer vacation and the beginning of the academic grind. I’m sure there are others who look forward to meeting new friends and starting classes.
We wish all of our readers an enjoyable day off and a good start to the school year.
