The Road Trip – Sunday Page #2

by Brian Walker, Greg Walker and Chance Browne

The Flagston family continued their journey in the second Sunday page of the 1966 extended vacation sequence.  The cactus in the foreground and the mesas and spires in the background resemble Monument Valley in Utah.  Director John Ford shot many of his most memorable films in this distinctive setting, making it one of the most identifiable locales in the American West.

The time period of this page is easily pegged by the style of the family station wagon and the fact that none of the passengers are wearing seat belts.  Hi looks like a modern-day hipster in his straw fedora and shades and Lois has the beauty of a casually attired movie star.  One thing hasn’t changed.  Forty-seven years later, Chip still does not have his driver’s license.

Check back soon for the third week of daily strips in the road trip story.
