For almost 60 years, Hi and Lois has been a creative collaboration between the Walker and Browne families. My father, Mort, and Dik Browne started the strip in 1954 and were one of the great partnerships in the history of comics. Although my brother Greg and I, and Dik’s son Chance, had been working on the feature for quite some time, it wasn’t until 1994 that the “next generation” officially took over.
It has been a pleasure getting to know Chance, who is not only a talented cartoonist, but also a gifted musician. He is always encouraging me to take up an instrument but unfortunately my musical skills are limited. A few years ago he made me this amazing hand-painted HiLo guitar, which I treasure but still can’t play very well.
This is the inaugural blog for our new web site. I would like to thank Mark Karlan, Tea Fougner, Michael Chan, Dan Pacifico, Deb Browne, Neal Walker and Margie Walker for their help in putting it together.
Producing a daily comic strip is a never-ending challenge. Greg and I also work on Beetle Bailey and Chance supervises the production of Hagar the Horrible. So, we can’t promise daily blog updates, but we’ll do our best. We appreciate our loyal readers and would love to hear from some of you. Check back soon. – Brian Walker
