I decided to enter the New Yorker’s “Eustace Tilley” contest this year.
Eustace Tilley is the iconic character that appeared on the first New Yorker cover, in 1925. For the last few years they’ve held an annual contest where they invite artists to submit their own interpretation of Eustace.
My collage to the left is a fairly direct interpretation of the original Eustace made entirely from New Yorker covers. I created the image using bits and pieces of about 30 covers from the last year and a half of the magazine. Sort of an homage to both the magazine itself and the artists who have adorned its cover.
It was a lot of work, but a very fun and rewarding side project.
The contest is open until January 24th, but you can see all the submissions as they come in on their website at www.newyorker.com. Good luck to all who enter!
