Patrick McDonnell’s beloved comic strip, MUTTS, has appeared daily in over 700 newspapers across 20 countries for nearly 30 years. Patrick and MUTTS have received numerous awards both for artistic excellence (including the Reuben Award for Cartoonist of the Year in 1999) and for MUTTS’ animal and environmental protection themes.

McDonnell is the author of New York Times bestselling picture books, including The Gift of Nothing and the Caldecott Honor-winning Me…Jane (a childhood biography of Jane Goodall). Both have been adapted as musicals for the Kennedy Center stage.

His latest book, The Super Hero’s Journey, in which Marvel superheroes go on the ultimate journey: to find the love within, was on 11 graphic novel ‘best of’ lists for 2023. McDonnell has collaborated with spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle on Guardians of Being and with Rumi translator-poet Daniel Ladinsky on Darling I Love YouHeart To Heart, a collaboration with His Holiness the Dalia Lama having an environmental theme, was released in early 2023.

McDonnell was a member of the Board of Directors of The Humane Society of the United States for 18 years and currently serves on the boards of The Fund for Animals, The Charles M. Schulz Museum, and D&R Greenway Land Trust.
