About Bringing Up Father

Created by George McManus in 1913, Bringing Up Father tells the story of Irish-American Jiggs, a former bricklayer, and his wife, Maggie, an ex-laundress, who achieve sudden wealth and all the trappings associated with it. While Jiggs continues to socialize with his old neighborhood friends down at Dinty Moorersquos tavern, the snobbish, social-climbing Maggie and their beautiful daughter, Nora, constantly try to elevate him, against his will, to his new social position.

With the slapstick clash of wills as its premise, an appealing cast of characters and smooth line art Bringing Up Father has always been a stand-out on the comics page and one of the longest-running strips in comics syndication history.
