Beetle Bailey Sunday page digital proof, April 2, 2006. The symbols Sarge uses in the first three panels of the Sunday page above are called “grawlixes.”  Cartoonist often use these as substitutes for real curse words which can’t be printed in a family newspaper. Chaplain Staneglass suggests some other terms for Sarge when he is chewing out the men.  The words that Sarge invents in the end are not very effective.
