News Around the Kingdom: BIRTHDAYS, A FAMILY REVELATION AND FISHIN’!

by The King

Hello, Royal Readers,

This week, Betty Boop celebrated a birthday, marking her first appearance in Max Fleischer’s “Dizzy Dishes” on August 9, 1930. Tons of fans sent their best wishes on social media using Betty’s own cool hashtag #HappyBoopDayBetty and we posted a nifty sizzle reel on her blog. Check it out here.

Speaking of birthdays,  let’s send belated Happy Birthday wishes to Rob over in Terri Libenson’s comic strip, THE PAJAMA DIARIES. He turned 50 (Terri tells us on her blog that she modeled these strips after her own husband’s life event) but it’s Jill who’s having the midlife crisis…

ON THE FASTRACK cartoonist Bill Holbrook advises that today through Sunday, he’ll be at Otakon — the  annual celebration of Asian pop culture (anime, manga, music, movies and video games. This year’s gathering will be in Washington, D.C. at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Bill will have a table on the Professionals Row of the Artists Alley.

He also posted the second in his new video series, Dethany’s Mailbox. Fans write in with questions and Dethany answers them in a very “animated” manner. 🙂 As a bonus, we see her sibilings for the first time!

In other news,

It’s a new year — 1967 — in his ongoing Timeline series for BEETLE BAILEY. This week, Brian Walker looks at a hilarious Sunday page in which General Halftrack looks more clueless than usual… Starring, of all things, an exploding cigar!

Meanwhile, over in the first installment of his HI AND LOIS Timeline series for 1967, Brian takes a close look at Dik Browne’s amazingly expressive artwork and the techniques he used to achieve that effect.

And finally, in his BIZARRO blog this week, Dan Piraro shares the back story and his philosophy on some of his favorite and very funny cartoons — some political, some
that readers have misunderstood and some others just plain silly. Check out his always entertaining blog here.
