In honor of Mother’s Day being this Sunday, May 11th, I thought I share a bit about Snuffy’s mother. She first appeared in the Barney Google and Snuffy Smith comic strip in 1948. Most of the time she is referred to as simply Maw or Snuffy’s Maw, but her real name is Meddlin Smif. Snuffy is her pride and joy and she thinks he does nothing wrong, but, on the other hand, she thinks Loweezy does nothing right! She was created by the legendary cartoonist, Fred Lasswell. When she showed up, the strips were very funny and memorable, in my opinion..
She has made more frequent appearances in the comic strip since 2001, which was when I began my tenure as the strip’s cartoonist. I have made her a semi-regular character because I think she is fun to draw (she looks like Snuffy in a dress!) and because I love the zingers she gives Loweezy! She can deliver pretty biting one-liners! She shows up frequently, often at family reunions and holidays, much to Loweezy’s dismay.
I hope you enjoy looking back at some of my favorite strips through the years that feature Snuffy’s Maw…
