Ask A Cartoonist: Treehuggers!

Category: Comics

Happy Earth Day, everyone!!! Spring is in the air and today is all about appreciating this awesome planet we live on.  In celebration of Earth Day today and Arbor Day on Friday, I asked all of the cartoonists to send me pictures and comics featuring trees to share with you!

Zippy loves trees. He'd love them even more if they were wirelessly connected to the internet.

--Bill Griffith, Zippy the Pinhead

--Isabella Bannerman, Six Chix

Count Weirdly's genetically engineered monster maple.

--Bob Weber, Jr., Slylock Fox and Comics for Kids

Hank loved drawing trees and that certainly comes through in this daily panel from 1983.

--Ron Ferdinand, Dennis the Menace

My favorite trees are those that you can get food from - fruit trees, nut trees and maple trees.

--Alex Hallatt, Arctic Circle

I love drawing trees. This one celebrates trees in the fall and those who should not rake its leaves.

--Terri Libenson, The Pajama Diaries

I LOVE drawing trees... cartoony leaves, branches, bark... it's so organic. I always loved climbing them as a kid, too. There's something about the "nook" feeling of the right tree branch for reading, doodling and just being, as seen here in a panel from a coming Sunday Intelligent Life strip where Mike is doing just that!

--David Reddick, Intelligent Life

I attended the first Earth Day in NY. 5th Ave was closed down (I think it was 5th? Maybe 3rd?) and my friend and I were sitting in the middle of the street where people were giving out little bags of earth. I was a student at SVA at the time. Anyway, here are two kind of Earth-y cartoons.

--Stephanie Piro, Six Chix

--John Hambrock, The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee

--Rina Piccolo, Tina's Groove and Six Chix

Here's a gag sketch for a Beetle strip I have yet to draw.

--Mort Walker, Beetle Bailey

Trees (and stumps) abound in Hootin' Holler!  And most of the time when I draw them, Snuffy is resting against them!  Here is one of my favorite Earth Day strips from years past!

--John Rose, Barney Google and Snuffy Smith
